Okavango and Chobe safari

8 Days

Okavango and Chobe safari is a tour through 3 countries, South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. A great way to tour Johannesburg, one of Africa’s big cities would be to visit the historic sites. Having spent your time in the city, you take off to Botswana through the North-West province. You arrive in Kang later in the day as you already experience the Kalahari desert. The Central Kalahari is unique in the sense that wildlife here still exists in their natural space. Botswana is a vast low populated country and the Kalahari desert makes up two-thirds of the country. The Kalahari quickly fades as the Okavango Delta takes over. The Khoisan tribe popularly known as the Bushmen will show you how they still find life easy in the bush. They are well known for their great rock paintings, art that goes back to 2 000 years ago. You will meet the Khoisan at Ghanzi.

Overview

Okavango and Delta safari takes you through one of the best safari country in the World ,Botswana. The Chobe national park with an area of 11 700 sq km is home to huge herds of elephants and cape buffaloes alongside other grazers and browsers like kudus, giraffes, mountain zebras, impalas, bush pigs and many more. As usual, these also draw a lot of carnivores as well including lions, leopards, cheaters, and other cats. The food web would not leave out scavengers like vultures and hyenas. It’s the concentration of an animal kingdom, the most common ones found in Africa.

This extends into the Savuti Game reserve further into the wilderness as you navigate the Kalahari sandy roads. This together with the Moremi game reserves are sandwiched between the Chobe river and the Okavango river. Although dry naturally, the concentration of game here is high owing to the abundance of food and water in the Okavango delta and the Chobe river. Arguably this becomes the center of all safari action you have been craving for. Far from the buzz of cars and buses like in most national parks the Savuti and Moremi game reserves can only be navigated by 4×4 vehicles. Moremi is at the border with the Okavango delta and the only means of getting into the delta is by wooden canoes popularly known as ‘Mokoro’. These mokoro are pulled by local ‘Polers’ who knows the routes through the reeds. The mokoro will transfer you from land through the delta to Maun. In Maun you may do the scenic flights to get a birds’ view of the Delta that has a buffer zone of 22 000 ha.

As you drive from Maun you all of a sudden be in the Kalahari desert. The dominant acacia short trees grace the desert along side other dry resistant plants, trees and grass. Amazingly the Kalahari is home to wildlife that can be seen as you drive through. In Ghanzi you meet the Bushmen as they take you into the bush to teach you how to survive.  The drive to Kang through the Kalahari, a different vegetation of the Kalahari sands, with open, bareness and flat land that stretches to a distance. In Johannesburg you have optional activities to do on your free day after the Tour. Soweto Tour and the Joburg City Tour are quite good experiences.

This draws so much wildlife to enjoy both biomes. The water channels of the delta here are navigated by the mokoro wooden canoes. The local Polers who pull the wooden canoes have good knowledge of the channels through the reeds. During the day you have game drives around Moremi game reserve viewing wildlife.
